bio:
Singer-songwriter Conor J. McAteer has resurrected the 1960s protest song with a stinging attack on the far-right BNP. Conor, one of the brightest young singer-songwriters in the UK, and freshly booked for BBC Raw Talent, penned ‘Wolves’ after the recent success of the BNP in the European elections. The song imagines two party workers planning a strategy to hide their racist policies and gain a foothold in mainstream politics. The twist is that the conversation takes place in an Indian restaurant. “Wolves is a caution to people who have been sucked in by the BNP’s attempt to convey a warm, friendly image,” said Conor. “It is a reminder that this is only a marketing strategy which they are using to sell the same fascist policies they have always stood for.” Conor’s keen sense of politics comes from his early years in Derry, Northern Ireland, although he is now based in Leeds. However, the depth of his songwriting enables him to turn to the intensely personal as well as the political. And ‘Wolves’ is joined on a new EP by ‘Things You Do For Love’ an arresting love song which is reminiscent of the sounds of Van Morrison and Jack Johnson – two key influences on his music. Conor’s new EP ‘ Alas, A Lass’ is out now!!!
